Posture and sound, a real correlation.

Did you know that your posture can literally “strangle” or liberate your vocal potential? Science confirms that the body is not just a container for the voice, but an integral part of the resonance mechanism.

A fundamental study available on PubMed (Open Access), titled “The Influence of Body Posture on Voice Quality in Singing” (Cardoso et al., 2019, PMID: 30799195), provides objective data to prove this correlation.

The study highlights how a misaligned posture causes a shift in the larynx and the hyoid bone, altering the tension of the thyrohyoid muscles. This phenomenon increases phonatory effort and modifies the vocal tract formants, making the sound less projected. Furthermore, a “slumped” position limits diaphragmatic excursion, reducing the management of subglottic pressure and forcing the singer into harmful muscular compensations in the neck.

Maintaining a neutral spinal alignment, however, allows the vocal folds to vibrate with the least possible resistance, optimizing the brilliance of the timbre.
